My Scottish Alphabet

november 26, 2009

A like Aberdeen and Arbroath or Northern Scotland (kind of) and the sea and weekend trip to Ab with swings and dark starry night and walking around and Scrabble…

B like busrides on the doubledecker, rushing down the streets to catch one of them, waiting & waiting & then some more, random conversations on heritage, the weather, road works, my accent, lunch boxes… Finding the change, picking Metro up, settling down for an hour of drive, nauseating and trying not to fall when climbing the stairs.

C like ceilidhs since that Hogmanay night on Grassmarket. Tuesday evenings and sometimes Friday nights, in the Lot, Pollock Halls or Prince’s Street Gardens. Stefan the Spinner, Probably-Pierre the Frenchman, Ozzie Alice. Best compliments and mad musicians, free water, stuffy rooms, bruises next morning and joy. Utter joy from movement.

D like donating. The world of charity and donation always amazes me. Thrift shop next to a thrift shop, marathons ran for causes and people. Ragged statuesque people kneeling on the streets, asking for pennies. People stopping, pulling a smoke and a conversation with them… Free shops, markets and blood donation centre with the film crew.

E like Edinburgh. That exciting elaborate extra special city. My home, half of it still hidden, but nevertheless so appealing. Safety and mystery, glory and trenches, pubs and parks and secret gardens. Stories and people, art and architecture, history and the seaside…

F like Forest Cafe on Bristo Place where I have spent so many moments of peace, joy, angst, fear, happiness, dance, love, tears, music, surprise that I have stopped counting. Place where people smile and make music and love, become friends and read, fight and eat, give hugs, massage and hair cuts, recycle and amaze each other with their presence. Sometimes the very essence of pointlessness and on other note, pure brilliance!

G like Geraldine, my lovely utterly hilarious heart-as-big-as-the-world sincere Geraldine! I am most happy and grateful that we started the same day because otherwise I would never have gone to the Grove or Berties. My lunch is always dull from now on.

H like health and safety. Mind your head and all other bollocks. And the Mobile CCTV van on Meadows.

I like Irn-Bru. What else there is with I???

J like James who I still can’t understand completely (he’s from Orkney). And the text saying he’s really disappointed cos he checked the news and I failed.

K like keg. Like a keg of beer… or rather a pint. Beer in general. Sweet sweet beer of Scotland, how I miss thee!

L like luscious green! It is very much green over there with all the grass and spring flowers coming up in March already and then it’s wonderful.

M like Mary the Scary from the cafe next door in Livingston who I was intimated by but now it’s always ‘Toona, not tuna, hen!’.

N like Niddry Street and it’s peculiar, most fascinating specimen of people and pubs.

O like OHMG in sign language or OHMG you have tried deep-fried Mars bas! (yes, I have!)

P like Pinto’s as in Lupe Pinto’s who had the most wonderful shop window that I passed every morning.

Q like queues. The art of queuing is an amazing skill. You can distinguish British people in the airports by the queues.

R like royalty. As in Royal Botanic Gardens (a delight!), as in Royal Mile, as in the presence of proud Scots, as in debates on royalty etc etc

S like sugar-induced coma after passing Greggs in the morning.

T like theatre. Being there, doing it. Seeing! Ian McKellen, James McAvoy and other glorious moments in Kings, Lyceum, Bedlam, Festival Theatres, the Fringe, Playshed and Howden Park Centre… Oh!

U like undone by the sheer vastness and variety of Scotland.

V like Vista like the song representing all other weird and funny words I had to sing during this year including several karaokes, hummed tunes on my walks, youth theatre songs, yelled variations on top of Arthur’s Seat on a lonely night, Estonian-Finnish anthems and other talents by my super vocal ability.

W like West Lothian Youth Theatre where I came to work and then they changed their name and we are Firefly and this is what my Scotland was all about. I came to work and I got much more. I became part of a family of those people and their little lovely quirks and ideas, projects and young folk, games, exercises, songs, meetings, Playshed, ideals, ethics, laughter, outings, printer rage, tea time and cookie sharings, cheese club which never really had a go and so much more. You became such a big part of my life that right now I cry for the very first time because I am going to leave you.

Y like YES, I love Scotland.

Z like Zac who helped me one evening by just being there thus recreating my belief in humanity.

Countdown on nullis. Kell on pool üks öösel ja 10 tunni pärast olen juba lennuki peal Kopenhaageni poole. Veider on. Tore.

Tore on. Ja ei ole ka. Heh.

Õhtu edenedes vaatasime ka komöödilist popmuusikaga rikastatud jutlust Maa päästmisest (Death Of The World Awareness Day). Esinejad koondusid nime all GAZE.

Lõpuks Forestis maha istudes nautisime kahe bändi vägagi meeleolukat kontserti ja ostsime plaate-EPsid. White Heath ja Pretty Balanced.

Ilus, ilus, ilus! Me lähme ja joome nüüd oma inglise teed edasi 😉

Täna sai siis korralikult festivaalitatud… Fringe’i show’de number muutus ühelt lausa viiele!

Üheksatunnine taidlus linnas viis meid umbes kuute pubisse, ühele tänavaperfonksile, kahele stand-up komöödiale ning ühele muusikale.

Jälle on viiskümmend-viiskümmend…

Ühesõnaga oli Show and Tell 18 ikka üsna lustakas. A in higher French indeed my dear 😀

Homme tõesti tõesti kunstiringile!

Tahaks teada, kes saatis kellele meili minu blogiaadressiga 🙂 Statistikud näitavad, et keegi gmailer on mu blogi juurde e-kirja kaudu jõudnud. Olen lihtsalt uudihimulik!

Samas olen täna olnud agar, orgunninud festivali, tegelenud koolipraktikatega, kuulanud vennatütre lalisemist, kirjutanud valmis rida asju, mis ma veel tegema pean, koristanud, süüa teinud, gaasiarveid jaganud, kohtumisi planeerinud ja nüüd ma olen väsinud, sest ikka veel sajab vihma.

12 päeva. Jummel küll!

Bananas of the World United!*

Peel banana, peel peel banana.
Chop banana, chop chop banana.
Slice banana, slice slice banana.
Mash banana, mash mash banana.
Blend banana, blend blend banana.
Go bananas, go go bananas!

(apparently there’s a website uniting all the bananas of the world: http://www.bananas.org/ How super cool!)
